The Ending of the Story: My 55th Birthday Party
by Vivian Vale, 55
So the party kicks off and my ex struts in first. His face goes beet red when he spots me by the cake. Honey, the man looked ready to bolt back to his car.
Then his younger brother the 42-year-old slides in right behind him. He watches me blow out every candle and forgets how to blink. My girlfriends are already cracking up behind their champagne flutes.
Cake gets sliced and my ex corners me with some tired excuse about the past. That's when his brother steps in for one slow spin around the floor. We glide once while my ex turns the color of spoiled milk.
The brother leans in and murmurs that I still move like the girl he remembered at twenty-five. I laugh so the whole room hears it. My ex slams the door five minutes later muttering sweet nothings to nobody.
By midnight the last guest leaves and I lock up with the quietest smile. One glass of bubbly later I toast the night I got every bit of drama I paid for.
Turns out the best birthday gift is watching your ex realize he lost the upgrade.
