My 5 Rules for Turning Up the Heat Without Saying a Word
by Elena Voss, 50
Darling, after I lowered my voice like that at dinner, my date could barely speak.
So I told my girlfriends these five rules the next day.
- Hold his gaze two beats longer. Lock eyes across the table at the little Italian place. Count one Mississippi, two. Then look away slow. He forgets his fork every single time.
- Laugh and brush his arm once. His golf story drags on. I laugh anyway and let my fingers graze his sleeve lightly. Suddenly he is telling it all over again with new energy.
- Lower your voice to a hush. Speak about the wine list so softly he has to lean in. The whole room fades. He hangs on every syllable like it is a secret meant only for him.
- Sit tall then tilt your head. Shoulders back in that velvet dress, chin up, then a slow head tilt while listening. His sentence stops mid-word. The quiet between us does all the talking.
- Smile slowly then leave first. Give him that half-smile that starts at one corner of my red lips. Finish my espresso, stand up, and walk out. He texts me before I reach the car.
Some men never quite recover, Darling.
