Ruby's Full 'Save Room For' List

by Ruby Hayes, 52

After I dropped that line on Brad, my sister finally stopped choking on her water and the church ladies at the next table suddenly found their menus fascinating.

Gary would have died laughing if he'd been there.

  • Brad's warm chocolate soufflé. It rises perfectly every time. I told him I'd always make a little space, even with Gary waiting up.
  • My sister's tart lemon bars. One bite and my lips pucker. She giggles when I say I always leave just enough room.
  • The deacons' fresh peach cobbler. Sweet and juicy on Sundays. Those boys fan themselves when I politely ask for seconds.
  • Linda's triple-berry crumble. Hot, juicy, and full of flavor. I swear I only go back for seconds because it's polite.
  • Gary's sneaky midnight brownies. He hides them so I hunt every last one. I call it my favorite husbandly surprise.
  • Church ladies' vanilla delight. Sweet and creamy every time. They blush when I confess I always save the best spot for it.

Gary calls it my sweet tooth. I just call it good manners.
